Police knew of problem bears before fatal mauling, but took no action

July 04, 2011 - Lillooet, Ontario (Canada) - Bear sightings are common in Lillooet, where berry bushes are abundant. But when black bears clawed at the door and windows of the remote hillside home of a Xaxli’p elder in June, the woman inside the house was worried enough to contact tribal police and the band council. One of those bears is believed to have attacked and mauled the woman last week, raising the question of why preventive action was not taken. Full report
